For a truely traditional Japanese hostel experience, I recommend Gojo Guest House. The staff are friendly and helpful and facilities are clean + functional. For travellers on a tight budget, Gojo allows you to make your own food, and the breakfast served in the cafe is fresh and reasonably price. Most notably, it is a safe + confortable place to stay and is just like a home away from home!

The Gojo Guest House was a good choice. The location is right next to the train station and close to bus lines. The owners and staff are knowledgeable and skilled at helping you get around. There is internet and phone access and clean accomodations. If you are on a budget their guest kitchen facility allows you to economise and prepare your own food. Best of all there is the opportunity to meet and spend time with people from all over the world. It is the experience we were looking for.

when it comes to traditional, friendly and affordable hostels - "Gojo Guest House" is one of the best finds in kyoto. no doubt! run by an extremely helpful and friendly couple (who cook a great breakfast ;) this guest house is located about 25 minutes walk from the main train station. its close to the main kamo river too - and they rent bikes (which come with bad ass rain coats :) to their guests - so you can explore the city and sights. we covered a lot of ground that way. the biggest temple in kyoto/japan(?) is only a 15 minute cycle up the road from Gojo. i recommend i recommend i HIGHLY recommend!

I highly recommend this beautiful little guest house! The place is small and cozy and feel like family. The hosts treat you with kindness and they really seem to care about your confort level. They speak English and can help you in any language. I searched for a good place on the internet that was within my low budget and Gojo was by far the best choice. Not the biggest, not the most modern, not the cleanest but the best! Great location! Save bus fare and walk from the JR railway! Visit Nara from here!

Here you go a wonderful place to stay! Eiji and Michiru are helpful, open minded, easy going and really really nice. The guest house and the cafe are well equiped and there's always good music around. The atmosphere is really chill out and there's not curfew!!! The Japanese style is everywhere, from the place itself to the lovely flowers Michiru's use to decorate the cafe... But you'll see... A place you can't miss if you passing from Kyoto!

Gojo guest house is a fabulous place for live. Eiji and Michiru are very kind and smily (like all japanese people). I spent 2 weeks here, and the ryokan is clean, spacious, with internet and kitchen ! It's near a public bath (small but there are everythings we need). And near many interesting areas !!!! We think that the Gojo Guest House was a great starting point to see most of the important temples and shrines in only 2 or 3 days! We loved the traditional feel of the rooms and the friendly staff on hand. In short this guest house is very clean, cheap, traditional, centrally located and very friendly. The showers are really hot and nice when you come in from the cold in March.

We had a great time! Eiji and Michiru are very nice and helpful staff. We did our touring of Kyoto on foot from the hostel and we very quickly realized that our hostel location was perfect. It only took a couple minutes and we were in an ancient dream of beautiful Shrines, Temples and parks. The hostel is a historic building itself and is kept very traditionally. I LOVE staying at GOJO House!!!!!!!!!!! The location is perfect (only 10 mins walk from Kiyomizu-dera); Eiji and Michiru (the owner) are very friendly, the rooms are clean. Not only that, gojo house gave me very homy feeling. Coming back from a whole-day-walking in Kyoto, my roommates and I always sit on the tatami and shared our exciting experience during the day. Sometimes, as it is too cozy, I just felt as staying in Gojo house for the whole day instead of going to the temples. =P haha...oh, one more thing I need to mention is that you will get free coffee coupon everyday. So you can enjoy a cup of delicious hot coffee in the nice cafe on the first floor in the morning before you head out in the cold winter!~~~ I miss it!
